Privacy
Short version: we don’t know who you are, and we don’t try to find out.
What we don’t do
- No cookies, no accounts, no trackers, no analytics, no ads.
- No third-party requests: every font, style and script is served from this site.
- No IP addresses or user-agent strings in application logs.
- No public “trending searches”, ever, and no suggestions built from other people’s queries.
- Outbound clicks send no referrer, so the sites you visit don’t see your query.
What we do keep
To tune ranking, the server keeps an HMAC-SHA256 hash of each normalised query with a timestamp, for 7 days. The hashing key is random, held only in memory, rotated daily and never written to disk — so the log cannot be turned back into queries later. Rate limiting keeps short-lived counters in memory only.
Browser storage
If you use the theme toggle, your choice (light or dark) is saved in your browser’s local storage. It never leaves your device.
Third parties
Forums tab: when Hacker News results are enabled for the Forums tab, the text of your query is sent from our server to the HN Algolia search API. Your IP address and browser details are never forwarded. Other tabs make no outside calls at query time.
The “try elsewhere” links (Marginalia, Kagi Small Web, DuckDuckGo) are ordinary links: nothing is sent to them unless you click.
